About the City of Kirkwood Water Department:

The City of Kirkwood Water Department has been delivering a reliable supply of drinking water to its customers since 1903.

The Kirkwood Water distribution system includes approximately 135 miles of water main. Our smallest diameter water main is two inches, and our largest is 24 inches. We repair an average of 150 main breaks per year. Most existing water main is four, six and eight inches in diameter and lies beneath street pavement. Most new water main is eight inches in diameter and is typically installed beneath grass, between the street curb and the sidewalk.

The Kirkwood Water Department does not own or maintain water service lines to individual buildings. Service lines are the entire length of pipe from the tap (connection) on the Citys water main, all the way up to the building. Service lines are owned and maintained by the property owner. A program approved by voters in November 2000 provides insurance coverage for water service lines. The program is managed by St. Louis County. For more information on the water insurance program click here. The City does, however, own and maintain the large water mains that serve entire neighborhoods. We also own and maintain the water meter assigned to each building. If your water meter is leaking or appears to need maintenance, please contact us at 314- 984-5936.

We invite you to read more about us and your drinking water in our annual Water Quality Report. Kirkwood Water Department produces potable drinking water only. To inquire about the City of Kirkwoods Sewer Lateral Insurance Program, contact Chris Pflasterer, Assistant City Engineer, at 314-822-5819. Other sewer related inquiries should be addressed to the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District, at 314- 768-6200, or visit their website:   www.msd.st-louis.mo.us
