The Bureau of Investigation is supervised by Lt. Scott Bailey and includes Detectives, School Resource Officers, and Special Enforcement Group Officers. There are eight Detectives with one detached to the DEA, two School Resource Officers, and four Special Enforcement Group Officers, a group that includes a Sergeant.  In addition to investigating offenses that occur within the Kirkwood/Oakland city limits, some detectives have dual roles, which include one Juvenile Officer, two Evidence Technicians, and a Public Information Officer.

During the investigation process, investigators interact with various agencies on the municipal, state, and federal levels.  They are also responsible for processing crime scenes, including the preservation, collection, and transportation of evidence to the St. Louis County Lab, and application for warrants through the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s office.  Detectives also meet regularly with other agencies to exchange information about area crime problems, and they belong to various associations that enhance the exchange of information and discussion of investigative techniques.

The detectives are members of the Major Case Squad, which responds at the request of other agencies to investigate homicides.  Each year, the Bureau offers training to area banks, large businesses, liquor license holders, .and other merchants as needed.  Other special investigations include sting operations and liquor license investigations.  Detective Doug Raymond works on a case
