Kirkwood Tennis Courts Re-Open after Six Months of Construction!

The rebuilt tennis courts in Kirkwood Park re-opened on May 10, 2011,  for public play. Construction began in October 2010 on the replacement of the eight asphalt tennis courts on the northeast corner of the park with post-tensioned concrete courts. The perimeter fence was also replaced. Kirkwood residents can enjoy the courts at a cost of $4 per day, while non-residents can play for $5 per day. Season passes, or a 10-punch user card, are available for purchase at the Kirkwood Community Center. Call 314-822-5855 for details.

The Kirkwood Park Tennis Center is a member of the United States Tennis Association. In 2001, the St. Louis District Tennis Association awarded the Kirkwood Park Tennis Center with Excellence in Tennis Programming.

Courts lit from April 1 to October 30.

KPTC NJTL Travel Team
Intermediate players, age 10-16, with a desire to compete in matches can join the Lobster’s Tennis League. You will travel to play other city teams.Practices are held Tuesdays from 11 a.m.-Noon, and matches are held Thursdays from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

KPTC NJTL House League
This program is for players, ages 8-14, who have either completed beginner’s tennis or intermediate players who want to learn how to play matches. You must bring one can of new tennis balls to your first practice.Practices are Mondays from 4-5 p.m. and matches are Wednesdays from 4-5 p.m.

“Get in the Game” Tennis Lessons
“Get in the Game” by registering for one of our 5, 60 minute classes, under the instruction of tennis lesson director, Emily Ottsen. Classes meet twice a week for 3 weeks or once a week for 6 weeks for Saturday lessons. All you need to bring is your racquet, a water bottle, and a new unopened can of tennis balls on the first day of lessons. Fees are R$36; NR$50.

Class descriptions

Pee Wee 1: 4-6 years old; this class is for 1st time players. Class introduces hand eye coordination skills, basic movements and stroke fundamentals.
Pee Wee 2: 4-6 years old; this class is for children who have taken tennis lessons. Class emphasizes hand eye coordination skills and stroke fundamentals.
Pee Wee 3: 4-6 years old; this class is for children who have completed Pee Wee 2 or have equivalent skills. Class emphasizes ground stroke fundamentals, serving, and score keeping.
Racketeers 1: 7-10 years old; this class is for 1st time players. Class emphasizes basic movement, stroke fundamentals and score keeping.
Racketeers 2: 7-10 years old; this class is for children who have taken lessons. Class emphasizes stroke fundamentals, rallies from the baseline and point competition.
Racketeers 3: 7-10 years old; this class is for children who can rally from the baseline.  Class emphasizes stroke enhancement, match play, serving and ground strokes.
Aces 1: 11-14 years old; this class is for 1st time players. Class introduces the fundamental strokes, rallies from the baseline and basic score keeping.
Aces 2: 11-14 years old; this class is children who have taken tennis lesson before. Class emphasizes stroke fundamentals, score keeping and match play.
Adult 1:  18 and older; this class is for Adults who have never played tennis before. Class introduces the fundamental strokes, rallies from the baseline, score keeping and match play.
Adult 2: 18 and older; this class is for Adults who have played and taken tennis lessons and would like to improve their stroke production and begin to play points and learn match strategies.
 
Private Lessons
Private lessons for kids and adults are available by calling 314-822-5864 after May and leaving a message for the tennis lesson director.

For information regarding rain outs and cancellations of leagues and lessons, call the Tennis Shop at (314) 433-4313. Message will be updated 1 hour before the starting time of the program.

Kirkwood Women’s Tennis Association (KWTA)
Screenings start in February, tryouts in April. Women living in Kirkwood, Glendale, Oakland or the R-7 school district are welcome. This league offers play for the beginner to advanced player. Call Becky Skeens ‑ 314‑822‑8868 for tryout information. Or for more info click here
