CERT Training Class Begins March 5, 2012

 

The Kirkwood / Oakland Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training staff will begin its next training class on Monday, March 5, 2012.  Classes will be held at Kirkwood Firehouse #2, 11804 Big Bend Road, in Kirkwood, starting at 6:30 p.m.  The training class will last eight consecutive Mondays, beginning March 5, and ending April 23, 2012.

Residents of Kirkwood, Oakland and surrounding communities are welcome to participate.    There is no cost to take the class.  Pre-registration and an application process are required.  The first class meeting will provide an orientation and will focus on home disaster preparedness.

Human Rights Essay Contest for H.S. Juniors Announced

The Kirkwood Human Rights Commission has announced the topic for its annual essay contest for high school juniors.  This year’s essay topic/question is:  “What is the single most important human rights issue facing your generation in Kirkwood today? More Siren Testing this Week

In response to several citizen calls about last Tuesday's outdoor siren activation, Saint Louis County will again performing individual siren tests throughout the County to ensure they are working according to manufacturer's specifications. The tests will be conducted Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, January 25, 26, 27, between 10:00 a.m., and 2:00 p.m., weather permitting. Each siren test will be preceded by a voice announcement, following by a one-minute alert tone, and then concluded with a voice announcement.

Citizens' Finance Committee Submits 2012-2013 Budget Recommendations to Council

Styrofoam Recycling No Longer Collected at Scheidegger Depository

The City will no longer collect or accept Styrofoam at the Scheidegger Recycling Depository, 350 S. Taylor Avenue, effective immediately. Midwest Recycles, the City's Styrofoam hauler, informed the City that it will no longer be able to haul Styrofoam from the Depository and will remove its collection trailer on December 30.  This is the decision of the recycler.  However, the City is extremely disappointed and will work to find an alternative method to recycle this material.

Lost and Found

Did you know that the Kirkwood Police Department maintains a Found Property program for any property that is found and turned in at City Hall or to the police?  Recently, a child's necklace was found on the City Hall parking lot and turned in at City Hall.  If you think the necklace is yours, or if you have lost or found anything, please contact Detective Urbeck or Detective Smith at the Police Department.  Call 822-5858.

All-Day Downtown Parking Passes Available Now: $5

Anyone planning to spend a day in downtown Kirkwood shopping and running errands can now purchase an all-day parking permit at Kirkwood City Hall for $5. The passes can be purchased up to 30 days in advance or on the day you plan to shop. Most downtown off-street, public parking spaces have a two-hour parking limit.  The passes can be purchased at the Finance window at City Hall, 139 S. Kirkwood Road, during normal business hours (8:00 a.m., to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).

City Answers Questions about Proposed Purchase of 107 & 113 West Jefferson

Kirkwood City Council voted on December 15 to approve the purchase of the buildings at 107 and 113 West Jefferson.  Some residents may still have questions about the purchase or the process, so an FAQ has been developed.  Please click here to download a copy.


Annual Kirkwood Police Pancake Supper February 9

The annual Pancake Supper, sponsored by the Kirkwood Police Department, is scheduled for Thursday, February 9, 2012, at Kirkwood High School, 801 W. Essex Avenue. The supper will be held in the school's cafeteria from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. "All the pancakes you can eat." Served with sausage, eggs, coffee, milk, and applesauce. No carryouts, please. Proceeds go to the KPD Benevolent Fund. Purchase your tickets at the door, at the Police Department (131 W. Madison), or at City Hall. Donation: $4.00. Call 822-5868 for any additional information.

CORP Needs Volunteers

Would you like to find a “cause” near your home, where you can contribute time and really help out? Are you a “people person” who enjoys interacting with others, especially individuals who will appreciate an interested listener? If so, you may be interested in a program offered by the Saint Louis County Department of Human Services’ County Older Resident Program (CORP).  CORP’s Neighbor Driving Neighbor program matches volunteers with older adults living nearby and needing rides for medical appointments.  Here's a press release with more information.

SANITATION HOLIDAYS:  Each year, sanitation holidays are determined based on when the landfills are closed.  For 2012, there will be NO sanitation collection on the dates listed below.  All trash, recycling, and yard waste collection will be delayed by one day all week (e.g., Monday routes will be collected on Tuesday, Tuesday on Wednesday, and so forth), except where indicated:
Martin Luther King's Birthday:  January 16
Memorial Day:  May 28
Independence Day:  July 4 (only Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday routes are delayed by one day)
Labor Day:  September 3
Thanksgiving Day:  November 23 (only Thursday and Friday routes are delayed by one day)
